Health Insurance in Arizona: Special Enrollment Period in Response to COVID-19

There is a new Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for the COVID-19 public health emergency. Individuals can enroll in or change their Health Insurance Marketplace coverage due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emergency from February 15, 2021 through May 15, 2021.

Who qualifies for the COVID-19 Special Enrollment Period?

Individuals, under Marketplace, who lost coverage anytime in 2020, but missed the deadline to enroll because they were impacted by the FEMA-declared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) national emergency may qualify.

Create an account and apply on HealthCare.gov to see if you qualify for this Special Enrollment Period, or log in and update your current application if you already have an account.

You can also still get 2021 health insurance coverage these two ways:
  • You may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period not related to COVID-19 if you have a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, getting married, moving, or having a baby.
    • You can access more information on the Special Enrollment Period here
  • You may also qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) any time of year.
How do I get assistance with applying for Health Insurance?

You can utilize FREE help provided through the Cover Arizona Application Assistance Program which provides support with applying and enrolling in a health plan with savings or applying for Medicaid/Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

To schedule an appointment to meet with an assistor, call 1-800-377-3536 or visit CoverArizona.org to sign up.

Is there free or low-cost health insurance available in Arizona?

Yes, Medicaid (AHCCCS) and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provide free or low-cost health coverage to millions of Americans.

There are two ways to apply for these programs:

    1. Complete an application through the Health Insurance Marketplace
      • If it looks like anyone in your household qualifies for Medicaid or CHIP, Marketplace will send your application to your state agency.
      • When you submit your Marketplace application, you’ll also find out if you qualify for an individual insurance plan with savings based on your income instead. Plans may be more affordable than you think.
